But that approach isn’t ideal for everyone — especially if you’re transcribing interviews, meetings, or personal notes. Sending private recordings online can feel uncomfortable or even risky.
So, we built an alternative: Whisper in the browser — a free, privacy-first speech recognition tool that runs entirely on your computer, with no registration, no data transfer, and no installation required.
Why We Built It
The main idea is simple: keep everything local.
When you use Whisper in the browser, your audio never leaves your device. Processing, transcription, and even model storage all happen directly in your browser.
After the first run, the AI model files are cached locally, so you can keep working offline — your computer literally becomes a mini neural network.
How It Works
- Upload your audio (MP3, WAV, M4A, and more)
- Select the language and model (tiny, base, or small)
- Click “Transcribe” and watch the text appear in real time
Behind the scenes, the app uses WebGPU — your browser’s access to your GPU — to accelerate neural network computations. If your computer doesn’t have a GPU, it falls back to WASM, which still works, just a bit slower.
